Josh McDaniels

As we talked about last week, Denver Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels had been in hot water, well now we can tell you that he has indeed been fired.  After the 3-9 Broncos lost to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, McDaniels was relieved of duty.  You may remember that McDaniels began his head coaching career with a 6-0 start last year.  Since that time, the Broncos have gone 5-15, and missed the playoffs both years.  It is hard to understand how a team that wins their first six games can go 2-6 the rest of the way, and carry that negative momentum to the next season.  McDaniels has paid the price for his team's subpar play, maybe he wasn't ready to be a head coach after all.

Who's next?

In this year there seem to be an unusual amount of head coaches being fired. The first one to go was Dallas head coach Wade Phillips, second was Vikings Head coach Brad Childress and now there is recent talk that Josh McDaniels may get the boot. I am curious what everyone else thinks about the firings in this NFL season. Do you think that it is the head coach fault that the teams of the recently fired coaches are doing poorly. And what do you think about Josh McDaniels was he too young to be thrown into a Head Coaching position and will he also get the boot before the end of the season? let me know what you think

Jason Garrett - Week 10

Earlier this year, we blogged about whether or not Wade Phillips should be fired after a dismal start by the Dallas Cowboys.  After the team many picked to go to the Superbowl got off to a 1-7 start, Cowboys Owner/GM Jerry Jones finally fired Phillips.  Taking over at the helm starting this week was Offensive Coordinator Jason Garrett.  The Cowboys' first game under Garrett would be at division leading New York, just three weeks ago the Giants came to Cowboy Stadium and knocked Tony Romo out for the year.  However, seemingly re-energized by their new head coach, the Cowboys put 33 points on the G-Men, and won 33-20.  So the question is will Garrett do well enough with the second half of the season to be named the Head Coach next year, or will Jerry Jones go after a proven winner such as Bill Cowher or Jon Gruden?  Clark Judge at CBS Sports say Garrett deserves a chance at the job, what do you think?

Week 9- Chiefs vs Raiders

Now i don't like the Raiders as much as the next fan of another team in the AFC West but when my team plays the Raiders i want to beat them by a large margin however, the match up between the Chiefs and the Raiders in week 9 was nothing of a blow out. I felt that there was one coaching decision that would have swayed the result of the game in favor of the Chiefs. When Todd Haley decided to pooch punt the ball instead of going for a manageable 51 yard field goal for Ryan Succope. Coach Haley had the idea to pin the Raiders deep in their own end zone but the result of the pooch punt landed up being a touchback putting the Raiders at the 20 yard line. If you watched the game or saw highlights you saw that the Raiders landed up winning the game in over time 20-23. Leading up to this score the Raiders tied up the game with a field goal with 7 seconds left in the game and won it with a field goal in overtime. Now if the Chiefs went for the field goal instead of the pooch punt it would have forced the Raiders to score a touchdown instead of a field goal to tie it up. I would like to hear your input in this game. do you think the Raiders are better than the Chiefs? Who do you think will win when the Raiders come to Arrowhead?

Week 8 - Mike Shanahan

Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan made a controversial call this week.  With has team down to the Detroit Lions, needing a touchdown to win the game with 2:00 left, Shanahan chose to bench his starting quarterback.  Donovan McNabb was having a rough day, so in came Rex Grossman, who dropped to pass on his first play, and promptly fumbled the football, resulting in a Detroit defensive touchdown, wrapping up the game.  When Shanahan was asked why he benched McNabb, he said, ''I thought that was the best scenario for us to win.''  So we now have a quarterback controversy in Washington after the Skins gave up draft picks to division rival Philadelphia to get McNabb, he is being pulled from meaningful moments.  Read about the game here.  So what do you think, should McNabb be the starter, or is this Rex Grossman's team now?

You Make the Call

I know you are aware of Brett Favre's age crisis in comparison to other NFL quarterbacks but my question this week comes from the continuous coaching decision to start Brett Favre each and every week even though he is off to one of the worst seasons ever in his 20 year career? not to forget his 291 regular season consecutive starts is in jeopardy becacuse of an ankle injury. in recent news Brett has come down with an ankle injury that may put him out for week 8. Vikings coach Brad Childress said that Brett's ongoing record will not influence his call whether to start Brett on week 8 but that he will base his decision on whether Brett can do the motions that are required by the position. the question that i am asking myself is Brett's unproven back up Tarvaris Jackson even able to play to the level that the Vikings are asking of him or on the other hand should they give Jackson a shot because what they are doing is obviously not working due to the fact that they are off to a 2-4 record and second to last in the NFC North division. I would like you to make the call, even if Brett was mildly healthy for the game would you start him or would you start to look for alternatives to replace the ageing, ailing Brett Favre?

Week Six - Wade Phillips

Go to fullsize imageThe Dallas Cowboys were picked by many prognosticators to be the NFC's representative in the Superbowl this year, a Superbowl hosted by those same Dallas Cowboys.  Never before has a team played in the Superbowl in their home stadium, but the Cowboys were a hot pick to be the first.  Now at 1-4, coming off a heartbreaking loss at Minnesota, is it time for a coaching change?  Dallas continues to be one of the most penalized teams in the NFL, and routinely make silly mistakes that make winning all the harder.  One Cowboys blogger says Phillips looks inept, check out Jean-Jacque Taylor's blog here.  So you be the judge, is it time for a new sheriff in Big D, perhaps Bill Cowher?

Onside Kicks Worth the Risk?

My controversial call comes from the judgment of the Kansas City head coach Todd Haley and his decision to do an onside kick on the opening kickoff in their game against the Indianapolis Colts. The last team to do an onside kick against the Colts on the opening kickoff was the Philadelphia Eagles in 2000 in which the Eagles were successful. I looked up some stats online on what the probability of winning an onside kick when the receiving team was expecting the kick is about 26% of the time it will be recovered by the kicking team. In Todd Haley’s scenario, when the receiving team is not expecting the onside kick typically teams have been more successful in recovering the kick, about 60%. I see what Todd Haley is thinking in this situation he wants to set the tone of the game in the Chiefs favor, trying to demoralize the Colts as well as the Indy fans. Going back to the Superbowl last year when New Orleans Saints kicked an onside kick to open the second half of the game when they were down 4 points and landed up outscoring the colts in the second half 25-7 winning the Superbowl, possibly Todd Haley thought he was onto something. However the decision didn’t fall in favor for the chiefs and gave the ball to the Colts as well as great field position. The following drive after the onside kick ended up in a field goal by the Colts. Also something to think about is teams are 28-15 all-time in the Superbowl when they have score first, I believe there is something to scoring first and maybe Todd Haley does to.

Did you like the decision by Todd Haley to do an onside kick to begin the game?
Do you think that call had any effect on the game?
If Chiefs had recovered the onside would the game of had a different outcome?

Tell us what you think. We would like to hear your insight

Week 5 - Andy Reid

This week in the NFL we will look at Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid.  After a recent quarterback controversy involving Michael Vick, and "quarterback of the future," Kevin Kolb, there is much discussion about Reid's future.  In a 17-12 home loss to the Washington Redskins on Sunday, Reid made some costly clock management errors, including getting a delay of game penalty after a timeout, forcing his team to kick a field goal, rather than go for the touchdown.  Offensive line issues also have a bullseye pointed at Reid, who is in his 12th season coaching the Eagles.  Reid took full responsibility for the clock mismanagement, and at least one columnist thinks it might be time for a head-coaching change in Philly.  Len Pasquarelli
writes, "In walking away from the field for good at the tender age of 42 in 1978 -- and retiring to the broadcast booth, and to lending his name to a computer craze, never again to return to the sideline -- Hall of Famer John Madden opined that no one should coach the same team for more than 10 years. If Madden was correct in his assessment -- and the always-opinionated Madden normally is spot-on in important matters of both football and life -- then Andy Reid is already two years beyond his coaching expiration date."  So what do you think, has Reid outlived his welcome in the City of Brotherly Love?  Or will things all look better with a win over the 0-4 49ers next week?
